VAC-TRON and F4E have developed innovative Glass-to-Metal-Seals for the In-Vessel electrical feedthroughs of ITER in order to pass the signals produced by the sensors. Providing high resistance to temperature and pressure with the possibility to offer safe and compact designs, this hermetic interconnexion technology can find many applications in aerospace, energy and Big Science facilities.
Jacobs has developed the use of HIP bonding for the manufacture of plasma facing components (PFCs) across a suite of projects over the past 25 years. Jacobs, in combination with F4E and Leading Metal-Mechanical Solutions, has developed designs for manufacture for various ITER First Wall Panel (FWP) prototypes, which have been successfully produced via HIP bonding. This technology is applicable to many industries (for example space, automotive industries), providing consistent manufacture of high-performance components.
By applying high pressure (~100MPa) and hot temperature (~1000°C) to compress the metals together homogenously from every direction , HIP allows materials to be joined with diffusion bonding at an atomic level.
The proposed technology is based on the exploitation of optical and mechanical properties of graphene to develop and implement environmental liquid cells suitable for cross-talk characterization of bio-cellular samples with atomic force, photon and electron-based microscopies, using conformable few-layers graphene membranes (Graphene Liquid Cells, GLCs).

The ‘EuCPAD’ system allows for real time radiation recording of all persons working in an exposure field situation, with local resolution of their trajectories throughout the radiation field. Thanks to its high accuracy and its ability to deliver the data to other areas more remote to the field of or primary source exposure, it may find application in the nuclear, civil aviation or medical fields.
Bertin Technologies and F4E have developed a shielded cabinet to protect ITER’s measurement instruments and equipments from nuclear radiation (gamma and neutrons) and from high magnetic field. Its modular design, easy adaptation to specific needs and constraints, offers a variety of applications for extreme environments such as aerospace, energy, or nuclear plant.
Tampere University in collaboration with F4E and TEKES have developed a vision software that can locate the position and orientation of a piece of remote handling equipment in an extremely harsh environment. Its simplicity and reliability make remote handling operations more efficient and accurate in different domains such as space, offshore deep sea exploration, rescue and energy.
FLUICONNECTO with F4E, TAMLINK OY and TAMPERE UNIVERSITY have designed and manufactured a digital hydraulic valve proposed as a new type of control system for the water hydraulic actuator. This technology paves the way for a more reliable, accurate and efficient motion control for transport, industrial processes and machining applications.
In the frame of the ITER project, a contract was awarded by Fusion for Energy to a research group from KU Leuven and SCK•CEN who have been developing radiation hardened integrated circuits capable of resisting high radiation environments. Today, Magics have developed a modular plug and play system where these rad-hard integrated circuits are integrated in, to support motion control applications for fusion and non-fusion purposes to support the maintenance and expenditure of nuclear robotics and nuclear fission power plants of the future.
Singular Light is a diamond based, universal multi mode to single mode laser converter, i e it is an efficient simple device that relies on Raman laser conversion for generating a single longitudinal mode (SLM) laser output.
This calibrator operates across the frequency range 30 GHz – 1000 GHz, and exhibits emissivity of 0.999 and coherent return loss of better than -50 dB. It can be used for the calibration of radiometers, spectrometers and other detectors in the submillimeter frequency range, where an absolute amplitude and spectral calibration is essential.
The proposed method helps designing di-electric coatings more robust against manufacturing errors by proposing an additional criterion for coating optimization. The method also helps retrieving for any wavelength the as-manufactured spectral phase-shift. Quality requirements and demanding optical performances of high precision optical instruments can be met easier.
Today's digitalization leads to a rising flood of data with increasing complexity and lack of transparency. By handling data correctly, the potential can be exploited and the opportunities of digitalization can be used. Thus, multidimensional data sets are already analyzed, developments are investigated and complex correlations are presented in an easily understandable way. GSI's own RoSEN method takes up these potentials and examines multidimensional data sets for similar data characteristics. The results of the examination can then be digitally processed and graphically evaluated.
F4E and ASE Optics Europe have developed an innovative optical prototype system to scan and to 3 D reconstruct high precision components at large distance with high accuracy for inspection and quality control Applications in dimensional analysis of large scale manufactured goods and finished products (rivet inspection) are considered.
F4E and Tekniker have developed an innovative portable metrology equipment able to measure the diameter of cylindrical hinges with 20 microns of tolerance An innovation in the field of Industrial Dimensional Metrology tools which could find promising applications in quality control and R&D to inspect pipes and valve manufacturing or metalworking for example
F4E and Micronor have developed a high resolution fiber optic incremental encoder system which can function in a high magnetic environment The all electronically passive design enables many potential applications where electronic based position encoders cannot be used. Micronor and F 4 E are currently working to achieve radiation resistance encoders that meet ITER requirements
Automatic metrological device for hole geometric tolerances. The proposed technology is based on an integrated solution for inspection and reporting, applicable in lots of industrial areas. HIT, in all its parts, hardware and software, can replace the thread plug gauge go/no go for the acceptance of the thread, moreover it adds lots of information about the threaded hole.
Digital controls for high stability and reliability power supplies used to power superconducting as well as conventional magnets
The power converters team at ESS has a cumulated experience of more than 100 years in development, testing and commissioning of extremely complex and high demanding power converters for several Big Science facilities, including CERN and ESS.
This includes but is not limited to: High Current power supplies (~ tens kA) for particle detector magnets, based on conventional thyristor technology; High Voltage and High Power power supplies, both DC and pulsed, for RF amplifiers; Grid power compensators for pulsed loads; High Voltage and High Current power supplies for Fusion Energy applications.
The High Voltage Power Supply is primarily intended for Long Pulse Solid State Klystron Modulators used in high power Linac’s. It is rated for 115kV/100A (pulse amplitude voltage/current); 3.5ms/14Hz (pulse width/repetition rate), and is therefore capable of supplying up to 4 klystrons in parallel, each rated 1.6MWpk / 80kWav RF.
Its design is based on the novel SML (Stacked Multi-Level) topology which provides enormous advantages over conventional ones.
The new fourth-generation ESRF-Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) storage ring features 50 times more magnet power converter units than before supplying almost 1,000 eletromagnets. This means ultra high-reliability power supply is required as well as "hot swapping" of power units without losing the beam and disturbing operations.
The new fourth-generation ESRF-Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) storage ring features new vacuum chamber profiles with reduced aperture. Radio frequency (RF) fingers are a key component to ensure good RF conditions and reach the best possible machine performance. A more compact, more robust and more reliable RF finger design has been produced for the new storage ring.
The proposed technology relies on the use of GaN (Gallium Nitride) direct bandgap semiconductors. GaN based devices offer outstanding performances compared to precursor Si (Silicon) or GaAS (Gallium Arsenide) ones, allowing to operate at much higher temperatures and voltages. This provides significant benefits when implemented in power conversion equipment, namely: increase of power density and efficiency, and reduction of mass and cost. GaN allows to manage high power systems in a very efficient way, decreasing the total system loses, while being able to operate harsh radiation & magnetics environment.

Cryo-electron tomography technology to functionalize the grids using photo micro patterning with a laser, allowing controlling the position of cell son the grids with a high degree of spatial accuracy. The technology works on grids of different materials, and patterned grids can be stored up to 30 days under hydrated conditions at 4°C.
The proposed technology is based on a technology developed for satcom; basically it is an MLI with ability to absorb RF. This is very useful be used on structures avoid scattering effects.
