Helmut Schober

Director of the Institut Max von Laue - Paul Langevin (ILL).

Nationality German. Born February 27, 1962 in Weiden/Opf., Germany.

Main fields of research:

Materials science, in the areas of energy and transport in particular (supraconductivity, heat transport, ion transport, vitreous transition and amorphic systems, quantic fluids, nanotubes and fullerenes). Experimental and calculation methods: inelastic neutron and X-ray scattering, optical spectroscopy, calculations based on density functional theory.

Academic Education:

1982 - Studies in physics at the University of Regensburg, Germany.

1985-1986 - Graduate studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, USA as a Fulbright student.

1988 - Diploma in physics obtained from the University of Regensburg. Grade: excellent (mit Auszeichnung) "The role of charges for the lattice dynamics of quartz".

1992 - PhD in physics from the University of Regensburg. Grade: excellent (Summa cum laude) "Investigation of the lattice dynamics of sapphire with the help of inelastic neutron scattering".

2000 - Post-doctoral Habilitation at the University of Regensburg on the "Dynamics of Fullerenes".

Professional Career:

1989 - Scientist position at the University of Mainz, Germany Detached to the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France.

1992 - Scientist position at the Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Germany. Detached to the DRFMC-MDN laboratory at the CEA Grenoble, France.

1994 - Scientist at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France.

2000 - Professor and Interim Head of the E13 Physics dept at the Technical University of Munich, Germany.

2001 - Nomination as Head of the Time-of-Flight and High-Resolution Group at the Institut Laue-Langevin.
